Welcome to the Leading First Nation Grade 7 to 12 School

Sunchild First Nation School offers a caring, culturally grounded learning environment where students in grades 6 –12 can build confidence, discover their strengths, and feel proud of who they are. As a community-driven First Nation Junior and Senior High School, we bring Alberta-approved academic programs together with Cree language, community values, and land-based learnings so that education feels connected to both culture and to the modern Western world.

Our smaller classes, supportive teachers, and programs that honour First Nations culture help students grow confidently as they move through our junior and senior high years, creating a strong and meaningful learning journey within our K–12 school.

Cree-Centred Learning Approach

Junior School

In our junior and senior high school, students learn in an environment where their identities and cultural roots are honoured every day. Lessons are shaped by Cree language, teacher guidance, and shared community values that help students feel grounded in their culture and connected to the Sunchild community. Through teamwork, hands-on activities, and everyday interactions, students learn to support one another and take pride in their traditions.

What Students Learn Here

We follow the full Alberta Junior and Senior High curriculum and enrich it with Indigenous perspectives and real-world learning experiences. Students study the core subjects of math, science, social studies, and language arts, alongside Cree language, digital literacy, and land-based learning that help them stay connected to both knowledge and culture.

Our students learn ways of seeing their world and their place within it, helped by their knowledge of the Cree language. The expectation of the Community, Parents and Elders is that Youth are able to respectfully contribute to the Sunchild community, while demonstrating attributes that help them define their path.

Life at Our School

At Sunchild School, learning continues in ways that feel lively, meaningful, and connected to the community. Program of Indigenous Education in Alberta program brings together sports, arts, cultural gatherings, leadership clubs, and community events, giving students many opportunities to explore what they enjoy.

Through these shared experiences, students find their voice, build supportive friendships, and strengthen their identity through regular cultural involvement. Our youth enjoy a school life filled with cultural expression, movement, creativity, and pride, one that values personal growth just as much as academic learning, helping them feel confident in who they are becoming.
