Sunchild School is an excellent place to teach. We pride ourselves on being vocally supportive of the behaviours we want to see: “Be Kind Always”, “Welcome”, “Stop Bullying”.
The school Principal and Admin plan ahead, and hold all-teacher meetings. Objectives are pretty clear, and it also helps to have a good sense of humour, and to be open to new ways of achieving teaching objectives.
Our small fleet of school buses operates each school day
Our cafeteria serves a breakfast program, a healthy lunch program, and even occasional community dinners.
We also offer daily lunchtime drop-in activity choices such as Arts Club, Tutoring, etc.!
You can also expect a wage that is competitive provincially, and a pension plan.
At Sunchild you can expect a modern school in good condition and with great amenities. We have better attendance rates than other schools, and one of the reasons is that our curriculum is “Indigenized”. No colonial education here.
You can also expect a supportive administration and a community that knows the value and importance of the School.
Sunchild provides a “whole student” approach that includes regular weekly availability of physical and mental health specialists, and regular visits from other healthcare professionals through the year.
At Sunchild you can expect a modern school in good condition, and a supportive administration.
Currently, about half the teachers are Indigenous and about half are not.
You should be prepared to tell us about your interest in Indigenous education. If you have other teaching experience we want to hear about that as well.
Sunchild’s setting is very special. Sunchild would always like to attract teachers who enjoy hiking, walking, nature photography, fishing, or other outdoor activities, as they will truly appreciate the environment here.
Highway 93, the “Icefields Parkway,” and the main route between Jasper and Lake Louise, is just 80 km away.
Rocky Mountain House, with a population of around 7,000 and offering all essential amenities, is approximately 45 minutes away. Calgary is about 2 hours away, and Edmonton is about 3 hours away.
Many teachers live in Rocky Mountain House, a 60km drive. The road is gravel for 8km and paved the rest of the way. The length of this commute is not much different than a city commute.
Sunchild School offers good Teacher housing located within easy walking distance of the school. A nominal market rent is charged for this accommodation. Currently, about 10 teachers live in this area.
Some teachers are from Sunchild, so of course they live here at the Nation/”the Rez”.
The attendance is good. Sunchild would always like to see better attendance, and reminds students about attendance fairly constantly. We’ve also linked attendance levels to participation in Sports and other options. However, we must remember that family obligations can come ahead of schooling.
Sunchild School provides buses and a breakfast program in our cafeteria as further incentives for school attendance. We also have Home Liaison positions at School that contact parents or caregivers when needed.
