Indigenous Education for Cultural and Advanced Learning

Sunchild School welcomes students from community families to learn in a place where education reflects their lived experience, their history, and their culture. Our customized Indigenous education has been carefully created over generations. Each academic standard has been deconstructed and built up again enhanced with Cree values. Each modified course has been accepted by Alberta Education in meeting provincial academic standards.
Sunchild School has locally developed curriculum, assisted by Sunchild Elders. These courses were accepted by Alberta Education in meeting provincial academic standards.

Indigenous Education and Cree Language at Sunchild School

Indigenous education in Canada is the backbone for shaping First Nation students’ identity and long-term success. When learning reflects culture, lived experiences, and community knowledge, students feel seen, respected, and supported in their growth.

This way of learning strengthens the bond between schools and communities and creates a shared sense of responsibility and care. Indigenous education helps young people stay engaged in school while building confidence, pride in their identity, and a strong sense of belonging that stays with them well beyond the classroom.

Indigenous schooling at Sunchild School is built around supporting the whole child. Social development, caring, and kindness are central to our school experience.

In our rural setting, the School arranges for visiting allied health professionals to assess any barriers to learning by providing physical and mental health assessments and services.

Our Approach to Indigenous Schooling

Indigenous Ways of Learning at Sunchild School

At Sunchild School, learning is guided by Indigenous ways of learning and Indigenous ways of knowing that have been shared across generations. Children learn by doing, listening, and being part of experiences that connect them to their culture and community. With support from teachers, Elders, and community members, students learn through stories, time on the land, and meaningful classroom activities.

Daily Cree language classes, monthly Cree teachings, and our Culture Camp help students stay connected to who they are and where they come from. Students have a foot in both cultures, Cree traditions and Western education. Along the way, they learn respect for Elders, care for the land and animals, responsibility to their community, and the skills they need to grow into confident, grounded young people.
